DIPLOMA IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND CARE

Early Childhood Educators assist in caring for the social, emotional, physical and educational needs of infants and young children in various care settings. Early Childhood Educators can have a profound influence on a child’s wellbeing and development especially in the years of 0-5. Qualifications in Early Childhood Education and Care focus on the core skills, knowledge and experience required to effectively assess the strengths and interests of children designing meaningful experiences that facilitate the child’s growth and development. This qualification reflects the role of early childhood educators who are responsible for designing and implementing curriculum in early childhood education and care services. In doing so, they work to implement an approved learning framework within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard. They may have responsibility for supervision of volunteers or other staff.

Australian Global College has the following entry requirements for domestic students:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have completed Year 12 or equivalent.
  • Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs.
  • Have language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skill sufficient to complete the course, for example, to read materials relevant to the course, participate in discussions and roleplays and apply numerical concepts such as time management. This will be tested through a LLN assessment as part of the course entry process. Students will need to achieve ACSF level 2 for reading, writing, numeracy, and oral communication to enter the course.

All students are required to participate in an interview with the Academic Manager or their delegate to check their suitability & capacity to undertake the course. The interview may be in person or via the phone/skype.

Have language, literacy and numeracy skills to read and comprehend learning materials and perform tasks related to recording care routines, maintaining education and care notes, providing written feedback to parents, recording medication and nutritional information, interpreting workplace policy and procedure, reporting hazards, preparing child development sessions.

Students will need to be reasonably physically fit as the role of an educator involves a variety of tasks that require a reasonable amount of physical activity, such as personal care of children, lifting and cleaning. Educators spend time sitting on the floor with children and on small chairs and also need to be able to get down to the child’s level to obtain eye contact.

Students need to be able to relate to children and their families and have a keen interest to assist children to learn, have good problem-solving skills, sound literacy and numeracy skills, be enthusiastic, tactful, patient and with a sense of humour. Long day care centres are open usually between 7am to 7.00pm so a willingness to work outside of standard hours is desirable.

Successful completion of this program may assist students to gain entry into further study programs and / or contribute towards study credits.
